I have re-worked my patterns and now the Teddy pattern comes with the option to turn the Teddy 'base' into a lion or tiger. Who's your favourite? (I won't tell them, honest!) ... I think I am still fond of Teddy but they do make an adorable trio and Lion's mane is super-fun to make.

Honey, I shrunk the bunny!

I made a Maileg mouse-sized bunny from my pattern template... This is one of the smallest dolls I have ever made and whilst there were a few tweaks needed, it was still really fun.

If you plan on re-sizing a pattern to make a teeny-weeny friend for a Maileg Mouse, then I suggest a few points:

🌸Forget the felt pieces. Instead of adding inner ear pieces and felt cheeks, leave the inner ear felt out and embroider little cheeks when the doll is stuffed.
🌸Stuff the tips of the arms and legs quite firmly but then stuff the rest of those pieces lightly.
🌸If you want some added weight (like the Maileg mouse) add some stuffing beads or dried cherry stones before stuffing the tummy.
🌸I printed this template out at 47% of the original template size

I'm telling myself this obvious fib because I really should be doing a bit of gardening (the weeds are TAKING OVER!!!!) but instead, I want to do some sewing.... because it's soooo much more relaxing than digging!

I think I'll make a bunny doll to share with you later in the week...The Blossom & Friday Bunny doll comes with it's own outfit pattern too ... the 'Monday' Romper and patch-pocket dress. This outfit design has three variations: a patch pocket dress, a short romper and a long, looser romper (my favourite!).

The Pattern PDF for the bunny comes with a 13 page instruction guide, template, printable gift tags and a link to the full video tutorial that guides you step-by-step through the process of making a sweet little Bunny doll.

I spend a long time making the videos because it's important to me to set these designs apart and create something that is more than a PDF. Every tip and trick I have for making a bunny is shared along the way, so you can make a beautiful creation that truly looks and feels professionally made... so grab a cup of tea and join me in my studio today.

The sun is shining and my garden is full of anemones and ranunculus so I thought I would have a go at making my own little anemone version of the free Little Blossom Pattern (see link in my bio). At the time I was a wedding & portrait photographer and I had a little, very basic sewing machine that I wanted to figure out how to use for something more than just sewing labels into school uniforms. I didn't want to make any clothing for myself, that seemed far too adventurous (and still does, quite honestly) so, I decided on a doll. Doll making only requires a small amount of fabric and it was a creative project that really appealed to me as it felt like a bit of a puzzle to work it all out and a gift I could give to a loved one at the end. After much fiddling about and research and taking hours working out how to turn tiny arms and legs I made a doll I was proud of and decided to share that creative journey. The rest, as they say, is history.

How fancy do these little kitties look in their Sunday best?

You might notice that the new patterns have a few changes! I have widened the leg and arm shape a little and changed the foot shape too (you can still use the older style leg if you prefer) and the facial details have changed too.

I found that instead of sewing in little felt pieces for the nose etc, I have really enjoyed embroidering instead and by creating an outline with charcoal thread I think it gives them an 'illustrated' feeling... if that makes sense., Anyway, these are super easy clothes to sew and they make such a cute gift when put together. Let me know what you think, I always love your feedback. More patterns on the way and I have had several messages about the Doll Design Workshop and YES!... it will be back soon :)

You definitely DO NOT need lots of complicated tools or equipment for doll-making. Some of these items are definitely a big help in the process but alongside my list of my top 5 tools, I have added some alternatives that you probably have already.

1 - A Turning Tool. When turning little arms and legs, a turning tool can be a huge time saver. The one I have is made by the company Prym and comes in a set of 3. Basically, they are tubes that you insert into the leg or arm and then use a stick/ tod to turn the fabric, right-side-out. A job that can be fiddly and take about ten minutes is done in about two seconds with one of these. You can also use a milkshake or Boba straw and a pencil or skewer.

2 - Forceps. Yes, this does seem like an odd addition but when it comes to adding stuffing this is a huge time-saver and makes the job WAY less fiddly. You just grab a ball of stuffing and insert it easily. An alternative would be a pair of tweezers... perhaps not quite as effective but still very useful.

3 - A Fabric Glue Stick - for attaching little shapes such as cheeks, pockets, labels etc it can be a bit tricky doing that with pins. I love my little glue stick as it holds the pieces in place. I have to be honest and say that once it twice I have carefully used a paper glue stick and it did exactly the same job... a great alternative if used sparingly!

4 - A Removable Fabric Pen - when drawing small shapes you need precision and more often than not a tailor's pencil just doesn't cut it for me. I use a lovely little pen by the company Threaders. It removes easily with an iron and gives me a precise and clear line. I have also used Frixion pens before. Whilst I will caveat that and say always test your fabric first, these pens have worked for me!

5 - A Dowel Rod - OK, this is a new(ish) essential for me. To be honest this is covered with my Prym turning tool set as the invaluable thing about a dowelling rod is the flat edge of the stick. It is ideal for pushing out seams to enhance the shape of your doll. An alternative would be the flat edge of a skewer or pencil, but be careful not to mark your fabric!

Who doesn't love opening a package of fabric samples? These ones are from Linen Dream Shop on Etsy and there are over 80 shades of linen. Honestly, there are about 50 that I adore!

This Kitty is an over-sized, soft stuff Kitty made using my 'Kitty and Mouse' pattern. In the next few days I will be sharing:

1. - How exactly I scale the print size to make a bigger or smaller doll.
2. - How I have 'soft-stuffed' this kitty, which is a method that I think really suits a larger doll, it makes them more squishable and cuddly.
3 - The new (additional) leg and arm shape add on. This will be a free template to enable you to choose a shorter, woder leg and arm for more of a 'plushie' feel rather than a doll.

This little guy is made by printing the Blossom and Friday Kitty pattern at 60% (he is 6 inches tall).
I will be sharing a video next week that shows you how to resize any of my patterns up or down, as well as making a larger Kitty to show the process of 'soft stuffing' for a more squishy cuddly feel.
This little chap is top secret as he's a Valentine's gift for Ollie!
You might have noticed that with the mini dolls I embroider the cheeks instead of sewing felt circles... they are just too fiddly at a small size. I have also added a little charcoal grey circle around the cheeks. I think it makes him look sort of like an illustration, like little pencil lines.

Tiny clothes are my favourite type of clothes to make... they are super easy, they are a fabulous scrap-buster project and they look so cute. Little clothes in a fabric of your choice is a really great way to personalise your doll design. I try and make my clothing patterns as simple as possible, I include little cheats, tips and tricks that wouldn't work for 'people-clothing' but for doll-clothing they are great!
